Ballet
Center Stage follows the syllabus of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), as shown below. We recognize that ballet is the foundation of all dance and that articulation is paramount to success.
Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Ballet
Founded in 1920, the Royal Academy of Dance is a global organization that develops the knowledge and practice of dance internationally. Around the world, trained RAD teachers instruct over 250,000 students in classical ballet. The RAD program offers formal ballet training, free movement and character work, and promotes high standards in ballet students and teachers.
The RAD syllabus begins at four years of age and progresses to adult. Yearly examinations are offered to students who qualify, offering young dancers the opportunity to earn recognized qualifications. The syllabus is graded progressively from Pre-primary and Primary, through Grades 1-8, and vocational exams from Intermediate Foundation to Advanced 2.
JK/SK Ballet
One of the most difficult tasks for a dance teacher is capturing the imagination of young children while developing coordination of mind and body without tension or self consciousness. Lessons, therefore, are imaginatively hidden within stories and rhymes which children enjoy.
Classes are designed to give the following benefits:
- Enjoyment
- Rhythm
- Confidence
- Ability to move and feel parts of the body
- Concentration
- Beginning the basic movements of classical Ballet
Pre-Primary (children ages 6-7)/Primary Ballet (children ages 7-8)
Classes build upon the previous level’s vocabulary, technique and structure. Similar to previous levels, lessons help increase self confidence, joy of movement and dance. It is at these levels that examinations are introduced.
Grades 1-8 Ballet
These levels are offered to children beginning from age 8. Ballet vocabulary and technique increase from the previous levels, and components include classical technique, free movement and character.
Vocational Classes
Classes from Intermediate Foundation to Solo Seal are offered. They have been designed by the RAD to train students wishing to study ballet seriously and/or pursue a career in dance or dance-related subjects. Pointe work for females is introduced at this time.
